Despite WASSCE Cancellation By FG, Students May Still Write The Exam This Year (Opinion)

Recently, the federal government thought the honourable minister of education, Mallam Adamu Adamu announced that schools are not re-opening anymore as earlier scheduled. He equally stated that Nigerian Students in SS3 will not be taking part in this year’s West Afrca Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE), citing that it is not safe for our schools to re-open at the moment. This announcement was a change of plans on the side of the federal government which has earlier announced that schools should reopen for students in transitional classes to enable them prepare for their promotional exams.

Since the announcement was made, Nigerians have reacted differently to the news with some commending the government for putting the safety of students first. Others have condemned the decision to with the affected students showing their displeasure over it.

Despite the federal government’s decision to stop Nigerian students from taking part in this year’s WASSCE, the students may still take part in the exam. This is because of the disagreement between the Representative members at the national assembly and the federal government over the decision. With this, the federal government may change the decision. Another major reason why the students may still sit for the exams is because education is on the concurrent list in the 1999 constitution as amended. This is to say that all schools are not under the control of the federal government. States have the schools which they control and as such, each state will have the final say on whether such school will reopen or not.

The schools that may not be able to sit for the exam or go against the federal government’s decision are federal unity schools in the country. Apart from that, it is the state governments that will have the final say on whether schools in their states will reopen or not. With the disagreement between the Reps and federal government over the decision, we hope to see the federal government rescind the decision very soon.
