See the Guidelines Nigerian Lawmakers Give the Minister of Education to Ensure that 2020 WASSCE hold

The order for the cancellation of the 2020 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, had created resentment, arguments, and complaints from all stakeholders concerned. Many people had considered this decision, not the best for our education.

On Friday, the lawmakers faulted the decision of the minister. They raised concerns about the effects of this decision on our educational sector. To them, the decision has brought more confusion to all stakeholders in the sector.

The lawmakers accused the minister of not consulting all stakeholders concerned before concluding on such a decision, reminded the minister that, it not only Nigerians that participate in the examination. So, the decision to cancel the examination under the pretense that the reopening of schools is not safe for the students is baseless.

In light of this, the House Committee on Education ordered the minister for urgent reconsideration on the decision to save the educational system of this country. More so, the minister had been told to take responsibility by providing policy direction and ensure that all states and stakeholders in education are engaged.

The lawmakers stated that the following must be provided and ensure the examination holds:

1. All classrooms should be used for the examination with adherence to COVID-19 protocols.

2. The Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministries of Environment and Health should provide workable plans on the fumigation of all classrooms, provision of handwashing buckets, running water, and forcing students to wear face or nose masks.

3. All students should come from home and disperse immediately after the examination.

4. The President should order all Ministers to go back to their states and work with the Governors to work out the modality for the conduct of the examination.
