Undoubtedly, till now, it still remains unbelievable that the final exams of SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 students will still be on postponment and students will have to be at home than their expected period of time from when the federal government withheld the operation of school in late March. Even as this declaration is a measure taken by the federal government to check the spread of covid-19, students still did not expect that it will take this long.
Coming to the look of things, in late March, the President Muhammadu Buhari in hand with the federal government declared school to be closed, then in the month June, President Buhari approved SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 students to be allowed to resume school and finally, this deliberate plan to allow SSS3 Primary 6 and JSS3 students to resume school was nullified by the federal government. If these decisions of the federal government are to be discerned, it could be realised that there are two motives that the federal government had as one is reopening of school and the other is to ensure that students are are safe from the virus when they reopen school.
However, the daily increase in covid-19 cases and the fear that it may escalate more if school reopen has been daunting the courage of the Federal government in reopening school for SSS3 Primary 6 and JSS3 students, as it could be recollected that President Muhammadu Buhari had once commended the reopening of school for only SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 Students by giving out his approval to that.
Moreover, following the way things are going now, there is a likelihood that school may not reopen this year 2020, as it will not be possible for a government that is deliberating on going for a second lockdown will be talking about reopening of school, following the recent revelation of the Chairman of the presidential task force on covid-19, Boss Mustapha that the country may go for a second lockdown as it seems that those in ruling seat are being affected by the virus thereby tempering with the governance of the country. Looking at this insinuation of Boss Mustapha, it is of no doubt that school reopening this year 2020 has been questioned.
Therefore, I am of the view that on the 4th of January 2021, all 2020 SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 students should resume school.
This is because, as the rampant washing of hands has become one of the pertinent safety guidelines that was given by the federal government in the reopening, it is noteworthy that all private and public schools ought to have a borehole to source running water for frequently washing of hands, but most of these public and private schools have not made provision towards this yet, in sync to the fact that the federal government and state government needed to make preparation in how to drill borehole in various public schools in the country and to carry out this task, enough time is needed, as drilling boreholes usually take long and that is the more reason why I am of the view that SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 students should be allowed to resume school on the 4th of January 2021.
Moreso, not only public schools but some private school owners for now, may not be buoyant enough to drill borehole in their various schools and time will be needed for them to source for capital to execute this task and I believe from now till before the month of January 2021 would be enough time to make this provision, therefore, I reiterate on my view that on the 4th of January 2021, all 2020 SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 students should be allowed to resume school.
Also, both private and public schools will have to be fumigated before SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 students will be allowed to resume school and following the outrageous number of public schools in the country it will be difficult and time will be needed to fumigate all public schools in order to ensure the safety of students in graduating classes, thus I suggest that on the 4th of January 2021, all 2020 SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 students should be allowed to resume school.
In addition, considering the rate at which covid-19 disease is escalating in the country in recent time, I am of the view that it may not be a good idea to reopen school for SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 Students this year, even as the minister of education, Malam Adamu Adamu has recently shared the same view that it will be better for Students to lose a whole one year academic session than to lose their lives to the deadly virus. Thus, I suggest that SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 Students should resume school on the 4th of January 2021, being the first Monday of the year 2021.
Meanwhile, if SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 students should resume school on the 4th of January 2021, by estimation, they will still stand the chance to finish their various final year exams before the preceding external exams for 2021 academic session will be conducted by then (2021) and there would be added advantage of time, for them to study their books at home and prepare wholly for their upcoming exam. Likewise in turn, there is a probability that the academic calendar can also be returned to its normalcy.
Finally, as parents has been kicking against the reopening of school amid covid-19, unless when it is safe and the safety of these students are guaranteed, I suggest that all SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 students should resume school on the 4th of January 2021, as before then, students must have mastered and learn to live with all the preventive measures that was provided by the federal government and by so doing, students will be able to willingly and easily adhere to the guidelines without being forced.
Nonetheless, below are photos of how classes may look like when the federal government reopen school;
In all the same, the federal government would be delighted to learn that students acknowledges their efforts towards the safe reopening of school, especially for the SSS3, Primary 6 and JSS3 students. Nevertheless, if you as a student think that the government should reopen school this year without carrying out the aforementioned tasks, do make your opinion known in the comment section below.
Remember this is just my own view which may be executed but however must be first known to you students, but you students should note that your opinion counts on what may be the fate of my view (DEMOCRACY).
