1. President Buhari presides over 8th virtual FEC meeting.

President Muhammadu Buhari is currently presiding over the eighth virtual meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) holding inside the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha, Chief of Staff to the President Ibrahim Gambari, National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (rted) nine ministers are also physically attending the meeting.

The ministers at the Council Chambers include Lai Mohammed (Information and Culture), Zainab Ahmed (Finance, Budget and National Planning), Minister of State Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba, Abubakar Malami (Justice), Rotimi Amaechi (Transportation), Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, Minister of Environment, Muhammad Mahmood, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouk, and Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu.

Head of Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan and Other ministers are participating virtually from their respective offices in Abuja.

After the national anthem, a minute silence was observed in honour of former Minister of Works, Major-General John Obada (rted), who died on the night of Saturday, June 13, 2020, after a brief illness at the age of 81.

Obada acted as Chief of Air Staff (COAS) from 1970 to 1971, and was Federal Commissioner for Works and member of the Supreme Military Council.

He also served as the Commissioner representing Delta State in the Federal Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission in 2006.

2. Magu’s probe: Allow investigation, prosecution to work – Buhari’s aide to PDP.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu has cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to allow the process of investigation and prosecution of corruption allegation against the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, to work and not to unduly agitating the public.

He said President Buhari, who doubles as African Union (AU) Anti-Corruption Champion in Africa, has firmly assured Nigerians that he will not be discouraged by baseless criticisms by the opposition in his determination to eradicate rampant, chronic corruption.

Fielding questions from State House correspondents on issues raised by the PDP since the beginning of the interrogation of Magu, Shehu, said the volume and reach of the anti-corruption crusade so far reflect what the PDP left behind.

He said corruption became so normalized by the PDP that they had difficulty defining what is “corruption” and “theft”.

Shehu praised President Buhari’s determination to end corruption in the country as responsible for the number of highly publicized charges and cases.

He expressed hope that the Judiciary would deal with the cases swiftly and satisfactorily, in a manner that would deter other would-be offenders.

“The current administration is handling many of the cases that the PDP should have dealt with and the new ones as they arise,” he said.

3. Frequencie joins EndRape movement, calls review of relevant laws.

Following the increasing rape cases across Nigeria, Fast rising Afro Pop Star, Ayokanmi Oluwasegun Eyanro professionally known as “Frequencie” has joined the movement against Rape and Sexual Violence.

Frequencie, in a statement made available to newsmen in Ilorin, said the silence culture, intimidation and weaker laws are responsible for the alarming cases of rape in the country.

He urged parents and guardians to give proper sex education to their children irrespective of gender, saying female are not the only victims of rape as studies prove that male and people of same-sex have been sexually abused in the past.

The pop star, who is also a Social Justice Advocate called on the government to review relevant laws to punish sexual offenders, adding that no rapist should go unpunished irrespective of their social status.

The Afro Pop Star, who recently released Afro Culture EP, however, cautioned that security agencies must thoroughly investigate rape and sexual violence allegations in order not to punish innocent persons or victim of blackmail.

4. Why we adopted e-voting for election of Deans – LASU.

The management of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Lagos State, has said it adopted electronic voting for the election of Deans of Faculties in line with the dictates of the time and to also reduce people’s exposure to the rampaging Coronavirus disease.

In a statement on Wednesday by the Coordinator, Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations, Mr Ademola Adekoya, the management also added that it had no preferred candidates in the coming elections.

“The university management wishes to draw the attention of Provost, Deans and Directors to its earlier directive that Faculties scheduled for deanship elections should take advantage of the e-voting platform of the university to reduce the risk of exposure of faculty members to COVID-19, in view of the ravaging and rising cases of infection of the disease around Lagos.

“Specifically, Faculties of Arts, Education and Management Sciences were also informed.

“The university management has however received reports that some academic staff members in the Faculty of Arts are speculating that the intention of the university management is to use the e-voting method to manipulate the outcome of the election.

“The university management wishes to clarify that the adoption of the e-voting method, just like most university activities are now done remotely through virtual platforms, is only for the safety of staff members.

“Arising from the above, the university management, therefore, informs all Faculties to determine and assume responsibility for the method that they may wish to adopt for their elections. Faculties that may be interested in adopting the e-voting method should indicate in writing to the Vice-Chancellor so that e-voting platform of the university could be made available.

‘The management wishes all candidates and the electorate a fruitful and successful hitch-free election,” the statement read.

5. Taraba State NLC Chairman dies of Covid-19.

Taraba State chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Peter Gambo, is dead.

Peter Gambo who was isolated early this month at the Taraba State specialist isolation centre Jalingo, died today at the hospital.

Management of the hospital confirmed the news of his death.

Peter Gambo, until his death, was serving his second term as NLC chairman, Taraba State.

6. Folorunsho Alakija clocks 69 today.

A Nigerian billionaire businesswoman, Folorunsho Alakija’s birthday is today.

The businesswoman who is into fashion, oil, real estate, and printing industries clocks 69.

Alakija, who is regarded as one of the most powerful women in Africa, and the 87th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes.

She took to her Instagram page early on Wednesday to appreciate all, for the love and support she’s received over the years.

“It’s my birthday today and I have many reasons to be thankful. I want to take this moment to appreciate you all, for the love and support you’ve shown me over the years. May the good Lord cause men to celebrate you as you have celebrated me. Thank you, Lord for this priceless gift called life!”

Folorunsho Alakija is the vice-chair of Famfa Oil, a Nigerian oil exploration company with a stake in Agbami Oilfield, a prolific offshore asset.
